Forestry and Environment Division plans to undergo restoration and management of the woodland in Tecumseh Park beginning summer 2019.  The health of this woodland has declined over the years due to informal footpaths, encroachments, invasive species, soil compaction, and vegetation trampling.  If the woodland is not restored to a self-sustaining ecosystem, it will degrade to the point of no longer being a functioning forest ecosystem.

The purpose of this restoration work is to restore the health of the forest ecosystem and create a formalized trail for future public use.  The park will be fenced at the north and south ends to prevent access to the woodland over the next 5 years while restoration works are being completed (please see Map 1 on back of page).  The park area south of the woodland will remain open during this time.

Active management of the woodland will continue through to 2024 when the woodland will be unfenced and re-opened.  Woodland management will include:

  • removal of hazardous trees/hanging branches
  • planting native vegetation
  • invasive plant removal
  • garbage pick-up
  • addressing encroachments
  • re-aligning and formalizing a single trail through the park including boardwalks through wet areas and interpretive signage.
  • closing unsanctioned trails
  • removal of unsafe structures

During the 5 year management period residents will be encouraged to join a volunteer stewardship group to participate in tree planting, invasive plant removal, and garbage pick-up events.
